What kind of PC are you running?
Author Message
When I stopped playing Xen quite a few years ago, I also got rid of my gaming laptops and haven't really had a PC until about 2 months ago. Been building one for the Oculus Rift & 4k, and finally at the point where I mainly just need a graphics card. Cut up an old Powermac G4 case and painted it, since I couldn't find a case I liked. Running a 4790k i7, 32gb ddr3 @ 2600mhz, Samsung EVO's in Raid 0, and waiting for the parts to build my open loop cooling. Going to stuff a 280mm radiator in there to start, and if I can, I'll have two in there. Its a SMALL case lol, so will be crammed in there tight.

Haven't built a desktop in a long time though, so it's pretty fun getting back into it. Anyone else like to screw around with custom builds here? Still haven't decided on a graphics card, but then again I haven't found any games worth rushing to buy one yet. Running an old 7950 I got for free from a friend, works well enough for now.

Seems like a lot of copy & pasted crap to me, lol. Not sure why anyone would build a gaming PC with those specs, and use a single SSD when they scale insanely well with RAID 0. It's like someone slapping together a car with all the biggest and baddest GO-FAST parts, not knowing if they will work well together.

On a side note, totally downloading Tribes Ascend. Forgot Tribes was even around anymore, used to play Tribes 2 competitive wayyyyyy back in the day on the BEML.

and actually it was copy pasted. from my confirmation email from newegg.com as I built this in July 2015. I'll post some pics up tomorrow.

Lets see some pics of the rig, I'll snap some of mine wed when I tear it all down, since I have to mcguyver in all this watercooling crap. Will be worth it though, forgot how much I hated fan cooling.

Damnit, I knew I'd screw up on one thing with my order. My radiator that's coming is 280mm, so requires two 140mm fans. My two Noctua fans are 120mm that I ordered, so I ended up having to order my 2nd radiator right away, guess I'll be stuffing the 240mm radiator in the bottom. Hopefully I can make it fit. If it all fits, this is going to be one crazy little PC.

And it's odd, you said you built ur PC in July, but the 5960X wasn't released till the very end of August... That doesn't add up very well to me at least.

And I thought of going with the new CPU's and DDR4, but after looking over a ton of benchmarks for a month or so, a ton of reviews and what not, it looked to me like the new Devils Canyon 4790k was the top dog for most things. And the higher end DDR3 ram was a bit faster, especially in latency, then early gen DDR4. I'm guessing this will change a year from now, but makes no sense to spend 2x as much money, to have slower hardware. Especially when most software, including encoding uses 4 cores the most efficiently. That is where the 4790k shines, especially when clocked up to 5ghz per core.

Lol, I remember my first PC, running dos and I had like a 40mb hard drive, and a 15-20mb hard drive. That 40mb drive seemed huge at the time, haha. Running a beastly 486sx33mhz cpu. Could play Doom, I was happy.

My first pc was a PC Jr back in 1984. It had128K RAM (from what I remember), and one floppy drive. I still have it, and it worked the last time I tried to boot it. I may have thrown out all of my floppy disks a little while back though :(

My current desktop has an AMD FX-8310 8 core processor with 16 GB of RAM. It has a 256 GB SSD for the O/S, and a 600 GB Sata for Apps. Nothing special, but it does everything I need it to do.
